3 moteur de recherche
Un moteur de recherche est un programme indexant automatiquement le contenu du web. La recherche s’effectue à partir d’un ou plusieurs critères (mot, groupe de mots, mot-clé, sigle, nom du site, etc.). Elle peut être plus ou moins ciblée (recherche simple ou recherche avancée), avec utilisation ou non d’opérateurs boléens ("et", "ou", etc.). Un moteur de recherche peut être propre à un site web, à un portail ou à un ensemble de sites. Le pionnier des moteurs de recherche est WebCrawler, supplanté ensuite par AltaVista (lancé en 1995 et racheté plus tard par Yahoo!) et de nombreux autres. Lancé en septembre 1998, Google fait taire les nombreuses critiques sur l’approximation des résultats de ses prédécesseurs et devient rapidement le moteur de recherche le plus utilisé au monde. En février 2004, Yahoo! lance son propre moteur de recherche, Yahoo! Search, pour concurrencer Google. En novembre 2004, Microsoft lance MSN Search, qui devient ensuite Live Search, pour les mêmes raisons. Le marché est énorme. En 2004, 35% des visites de sites débutent par le lancement d’une requête dans un moteur de recherche. Le marché que représentent les liens sponsorisés se chiffre à plusieurs milliards de dollars. En novembre 2006, selon le cabinet Nielsen/NetRatings, 50% des recherches sont effectuées sur Google, 25% sur Yahoo! Search, 8% sur Live Search (Microsoft) et 6% sur AOL (America OnLine).
